The Wonder of Essential Oils

Essential oils have been used throughout history for so many health related treatments. Almost every culture around the globe has made use of nature’s bounty to create their own unique oils and each has a specific purpose and use. Essential oils are the actual ‘essence’ of the plant, seed or root, removing any of the extraneous product and allowing the true scent, vitamins and minerals to remain.

There are a number of ways of essential oil extraction: distillation through the use of steam, solvent extract through the use of an outside chemical or carbon dioxide, oil extract which adds an additional oil to coax the essence out, organic extract through the use of water and organic solvents to soak the essence; and cold-press extract which is often used in the organic process and does not involve heat which can reduce the quality of the essence.

Essential oils are used in a variety of environments, from aromatherapy to health and wellness products for hair and skin. Each plant or flower brings its own unique talent in scent to enhance, relax or soothe.

Lavender removes stress while compounds in the oils can help in the healing process of minor bruises, cuts or skin irritations. Marigold is especially good for anyone that has sensitive skin and is used to soothe those that suffer from psoriasis. Chamomile is exceptional for relaxation and in the opposite, peppermint brings a sense of mental alertness. Frankincense also assists the healing of minor cuts. Oregano and eucalyptus is used by those who are fighting colds or flu. Lemon is a detoxifying oil and also helps to increase focus. Grapefruit acts as a natural antiseptic and helps those experiencing the effects from jet lag.

The beauty of essential oils is that they can be designed for both external or topical application, to add to warm bath water or for aromatherapy purposes. Always make sure you have checked to assure that you have the proper oils for the proper purpose. If you are taking internally, confer with a primary health caregiver before making any changes. Certain oils, such as grapefruit, can have drastic interactions with medication.
